About this event
The Giostra del Carracino is a lively historical joust that takes over Rassina, the main village of the scattered comune of Castel Focognano, for four summer evenings (26-29 August). Now in its 13th edition, it pits the village’s four districts - Lama, Borgo, Villarosa and Di Là dal Ponte - against each other in a witty, homespun version of Arezzo’s famous Giostra del Saracino: instead of mounted knights, each ‘giostratore’ straddles a wheelbarrow (carriola) pushed at full tilt by a teammate and charges with a lance at a painted wooden figure. The build-up includes propitiatory dinners in the days before, a colourful costumed procession through the old borgo, and a grand final joust in the Campo di gara at 21:00, followed by celebrations for the winning district. Entry is free and the atmosphere is family-friendly and fiercely local.
Happens every year.
