Subbiano

The door to the valley

Subbiano straddles the Arno at the mouth of the Casentino, the last flat place before the valley closes in. It is a working comune with a surprising amount going on, and if you are driving up from Arezzo it is the first Casentino town you meet.

What to see

  • The bridge and the river The Arno at the point where the valley narrows. Stand on the bridge and you can see the mountains close.
  • The old tower What is left of the fortifications that made Subbiano worth holding.
  • Castelnuovo di Subbiano The hill village above, quiet and stone-built.
  • The hills either side The valley’s first proper slopes, with paths going up both flanks.

What to eat

Solid Aretine cooking and a good deal of it. This is not a place that serves small portions to people who have been outside all day.

When to come

Whenever you are heading into the valley. It has more going on through the year than towns three times its size.

Everything that has ever come into the Casentino by road has come through here. Armies, wool, pilgrims, and now you.
